In 2019 Richard Muema escaped death narrowly after being shot 8 times while at a friend's Mpesa shop in Kasarani.

Although the world has since forgotten about the incident, he continues battling with the side effects that came with the shooting.

One of those is using a colostomy bag to pass faeces.

A colostomy bag is a plastic bag that collects faecal matter from the digestive tract through an opening in the abdominal wall called a stoma.

A person often needs a colostomy due to injury, disease, or another issue with the lower bowels. In some cases, the colostomy is temporary.

In other situations, such as the removal of the colon the colostomy may be permanent.

Sharing his experience during an interview with Kalekye's Health Moments, Muema shared,

"When we got to Kenyatta hospital after the incident I was in a coma for two weeks so I rely on what I am told.

People were 50/50 about my survival. I thank God for my being alive, it is a miracle.

After the bullets were removed they forgot the one (bullet) in my hand.

They washed me as my internals were injured, I would be taken to the theatre

I was told I went under cardiac arrest during the times my wounds were being cleaned up.

When I woke up after two weeks my hands and legs had been tied up, I asked why I had been tied and they told me I had tried removing the tubes in my body."

Muema added, "At that time I was so sick even lifting my neck was a problem.

I would be taken back to the theatre every hour to have my internals washed. At the time my intestines were put in a Bogota bag.

I remember there is a day I had not been taken to the theatre for 48 hours and I started feeling like I was rotting, I called the doctor who immediately called for action.

I think it's that time that I went into cardiac arrest.

My colon was removed and so I can't go to the washroom the normal way.

Life changed for me as everything was being done for me."

Muema says it's not been an easy journey but he is determined to push through

"I would be put on pampers for almost a week before they gave me a colostomy bag.

They blocked my anus. It's challenging because sometimes you might just start eating and the faeces come immediately.

Life has been very hard, but I have tried to normalize it. The colostomy bag is very expensive as you can't get it just anywhere.

One bag goes for Ksh 750, you can use it in a day.

Getting that bag is a problem."
