A section of MPs from the Western has demanded the release of Bungoma-based preacher Eliud Wekesa, popularly known as Yesu wa Tongaren.

Led by Tongaren MP John Chikati, the lawmakers added that the preacher's release should include no bond terms.

"Na tunauliza ya kwamba atolewe without any conditions. Asipatiwe bond yoyote atolewe on free bond (We ask that his release comes without conditions. He should not be given any bond term. He should be released on free bond)," Chikati said.

He added that Yesu wa Tongaren presented no harm, saying he was a man focused on praying for people.

"Anaombea Papa wa Roma akuwe president. Yesu wa Tongaren aachiliwe (He is praying for Papa wa Roma (Moses Wetang'ula) to be president. Release Yesu wa Tongaren)," the MP added.

Chikati said the preacher is a poor man who can not be associated with money laundering.

He added that he was well acquainted with Yesu wa Tongaren, considering that they lived in the same area.

Chikati was accompanied by Webuye East MP Martin Wanyonyi.

On May 10, Yesu wa Tongaren presented himself to the police station for questioning after he was summoned by Bungoma police commander Francis Kooli.

Kooli summoned the leader of the New Jerusalem church for questioning over alleged questionable religious teachings.

On May 11, Bungoma Court allowed the court to detain him for four more days for a mental assessment and completion of the probe.

He is accused of unlawful operation of an unregistered society, radicalization, and money laundering.
