The leader of the atheists association in Kenya, Harrison Mumia has asked the National Police Service to release the leader of the New Jerusalem Church based in Bungoma Mr Eliud Wekesa aka Jesus of Tongaren immediately without any coercion.

In a statement, Mumia through their association of atheists in Kenya, challenged the National Police Service to present the real Jesus in court if they want their case against Jesus of Tongaren to be stopped.

"We demand the immediate release of Jesus of Tongaren. The police must release the real Jesus if their claim is that this man is not the real Jesus Christ, the Son of Yahweh!" AIK said in a statement signed by its leader Harrison Mumia.

According to Mumia, the Biblical Jesus is a fictional character, created by religions claiming to be Christian, unlike the real-life Tongaren Jesus.

"Jesus of Tongaren exists, and as far as we are concerned, he does not lead a sect. The police are overzealous in arresting him," Mr Mumia said.

The complex union released the statement a few hours after the Bungoma court gave permission for investigators to detain Jesus of Tongaren for four more days until May 16.

The presiding judge of the Bungoma court, Tom Mark Olando, gave permission to the police to detain Jesus for four more days to undergo a mental examination before he is taken to the dock again on Tuesday week tomorrow.

The prosecution had asked for seven days for a full investigation into Wekesa's teachings and activities.

In its affidavit, the prosecution claimed the church in Wekesa, New Jerusalem, was not legally registered.

Wekesa voluntarily surrendered to the police on Wednesday following a call for questioning about his religious teachings and activities.
