Nigerian Afrobeat star Davido has announced that he is giving out the entire sum of NGN 200 million (approx. Ksh.54.5 million) he received from his friends and fans as a birthday gift.
The celebrated artiste turned 29-years-old today.
He added that he will be topping up the donation with his own personal contribution of NGN 50 million (approx. Ksh.13.6 million) towards the cause, making it a total of over Ksh.68 million.
“I am delighted to announce that all the funds received, totalling NGN 200,000,000 will be donated to orphanages across the country as well as the Paroche foundation.
In addition, I will be making a personal donation of NGN 50,000,000, bringing the total amount to NGN 250,000,000,” he wrote in a public statement on Saturday, a day before his birthday.
Davido said he has always been passionate about giving back and helping people, adding that the only way through which one can rise is by uplifting others who are below them.
He revealed that his goal is to do such fundraising annually to celebrate his birthday, urging the public and his associates to continue bolstering him as he drives the cause.
“My goal is to do this fundraising every year to celebrate my birthday and give back to people in need.
It is my hope that my friends, fans, colleagues in the industry and the public will continue to support me as I drive this cause." he said.
Davido has appointed a five-member disbursement committee to oversee the distribution of funds to beneficiaries.
“The committee will compile a list of orphanages across Nigeria. They will determine the number of children and their needs at each orphanage, then divide the funds accordingly,” he stated.
He however directed the committee to specifically disburse a portion of the money to a foundation that enlightens young people on the dangers of substance abuse and addiction called the Paroche Foundation.
