Long lines seen as Kenyans throng polling stations

On Tuesday, thousands of Kenyans flocked to voting locations in order to participate in the much-anticipated elections.

The-Star conducted a spot check on Tuesday and found that several voting places had long lines and that walking lanes were congested with parked cars.

Most voters were telling stories as they queued up from the school gate to the Karuna Close corner at Westlands Primary.

Voters at Lower Kabete Primary were still being kept outdoors since the school gate wasn't open as of 5 am.

Hundreds of voters have already begun to arrive in Mombasa at Maweni Primary School in Nyali to participate in today's election.

The huge slum communities of Maweni, Kisumu Ndogo, and Kidogo Basi are home to the voting place, which is located in Nyali's Mkomani Ward.

One of Nyali's largest centers, it has more than 5,000 registered voters. With almost 9,000 voters, Ziwa La Ngombe Primary School is Nyali's biggest polling place.

Early in the morning, supporters of ODM leader Raila Odinga began playing trumpets and whistles to encourage people to get up and vote.

The backers are a member of the Firimbi Movement, which Raila Odinga, the presidential candidate for the Azimio la Umoja Coalition party, started on July 28.

A total of 24, 154 people are registered to vote in Mkomani ward. Nyali has 124,253 registered voters, making it the second-most populous town behind Kisauni, which has 135,276.
