According to reports from South African media outlets, the former President failed to appear in court over an inquiry on corruption earlier this year.

South Africa's constitutional court found Zuma to be guilty of being in contempt of court; hence sentencing him to more than one year behind bars.

"He owes this sentence not only in respect of violating the constitutional court but to the nation he once promised to lead and to the constitution, he once vowed to uphold," read part of a ruling by Justice Khampepe.
