Karen Nyamu reacts to Kawira Mwangaza's impeachment

• On Wednesday 21st August 2024 the High Court suspended the Senate's decision to impeach her.

Nominated Senator Karen Nyamu has reacted to the impeachment of Meru governor Kawira Mwangaza.

She says although she supports her impeachment, there is nothing worth celebrating.

The vocal lawmaker added that August 20, 2024, will remain unforgettable.

“I will never forget how some colleagues celebrated the Meru governor’s impeachment tonight. Not that I don’t support her impeachment, but celebrating?? Watu wana roho yenye sitawai elewa,” she said.

Nyamu went on to Tweet;

"Very weak grounds to uphold an impeachment. The threshold was missed by far. However, a political decision had to be made to save Meru from the back and forth,”.

Further adding

“How are you not able to deal with your people? As governor, you were the senior politician in Meru, you should be the one doing the victimizing, and not complaining of the same all in all it was a sad day from G7 to G6. Painful.”

 Kawira Mwangaza has lost her seat after being impeached on Wednesday.

The development came after senators upheld her impeachment by the Meru county assembly.

Some 26 senators voted to uphold the first charge of gross violation of the Constitution and other laws.

Some 14 senators abstained while four voted in her favour.

On the second charge of gross misconduct, 26 senators voted in favour of her impeachment, two against, while 14 others abstained.

27 senators upheld the charge of abuse of office, one voted against and 14 abstained.

On Wednesday 21st August 2024 the High Court suspended the Senate's decision to impeach her.

Justice Bahati Mwamuye at the same time restrained speaker of the Senate Amason Kingi from publishing in the Kenya Gazette notice a declaration of a vacancy in the office of the Governor of Meru County...
