Teacher Tabichi who was awarded as the best teacher in the world has been tasked to  spearhead reforms in the education sector as he evaluate the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

He will then proceed to submit the final findings to the President for consideration.

President Ruto formed a working party on education reforms which will be led by chairman Raphael Munavu with Kenyatta University vice-chancellor Paul Wainaina and his University of Nairobi counterpart, Stephen Gitahi Kiama.

A gazette notice published on September 30, indicated the party will be tasked with assessing before recommending the appropriate structures to be adopted and implemented in CBC. 

The Munavu-led task force will be expected to undertake a summative evaluation of CBC, study all laws governing the basic education subsector, and make recommendations.

The new team has also been tasked with assessing the examination framework and also evaluate the teacher education and training framework for both preservice and in-service.

The Head of State Ruto further gave the working party to look into the teachers' deployment policies and general school governance.

"To review and recommend appropriate financing framework including capitation and minimum essential package grants for all basic education levels.

"To review and recommend a framework for physical and infrastructure development and coordination of public-private partnerships for improved access and quality provision," Ruto stated.

In March 2019, Tabichi won the Varkey Foundation 2019 Global Teacher Prize for his achievements in the remote and overpopulated Keriko Mixed Day Secondary school where he teaches math and physics.

Tabichi is best known for giving away most of his salary to support poorer pupils.

He won a $1m prize (£760,000) for the world's best teacher.
