By September 2024, the construction of a cannabis production plant in Rwanda’s northern district of Musanze is expected to be complete.

King Kong Organics (KKOG) Rwanda, a subsidiary of the American corporation KKOG Global, is developing the facility.

The company, which is one of the largest licensed cannabis producers in Africa with operations in DR Congo, Zimbabwe, Malawi, and Uganda, secured a five-year contract in March 2024 to produce cannabis in Rwanda, supported by President Paul Kagame.

The Rwanda Development Board (RDB) authorized the cultivation of cannabis for medicinal purposes, including extraction and export of various medicinal products.

According to The New Times, the plant is nearly 70 percent complete and is expected to be finished by the first week of September.

Rwanda legalized medical marijuana, though the use and sale of recreational cannabis remain prohibited.
