Jowie in court for his sentencing in the murder of Monicah Kimani

Jowie Irungu has appeared in court ahead of his sentencing  after he was found guilty of the murder of businesswoman Monica Kimani.

However, before he is sentenced, Jowie will be given an opportunity to mitigate, the purpose being to encourage the judge to be lenient in the sentencing.

Jowie was convicted over the murder last month while his co-accused Jacque Maribe was let off the hook. The two were jointly facing the murder charges.

Maribe was acquitted based on the prosecutions failure to place her at the scene of the crime.

The judge said they did not adduce sufficient evidence to incriminate Maribe adding that “It is my considered view that the charge brought against the second accused person (Jacque Maribe) was not the proper charge.”

As the court was pronouncing its judgement on that day, Jowie could not help but sob quietly as the judge gave a blow-to-blow account of how he meditated on Monica’s murder to the point of execution.

The judge said the nature of the injuries on Monica’s body was proof that it had been planned.

Monica’s neck was slit right up to the back which the court said was akin to slaughtering a goat.
