Mama Evolve was very courageous

Family and friends of Mama Evolve - Mary Hongo - are still coming to terms with her untimely death.

Hongo collapsed at her business in Lucky Summer on Wednesday 22, September 2021, evening, she was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.

She was thrust into the limelight when her son, Felix Orinda, popularly known as DJ Evolve was shot in the neck by Embakasi East MP Babu Owino.

After the incident, members from the entertainment fraternity came together and organised a fundraising to cater for his bills.

One of the personalities who spearheaded the venture was turntablist DJ Shock - real name Jacqueline Mugo -who worked hand in hand with Mama Evolve.

Speaking to Mpasho, DJ Shock said, "The first time I met Mama Evolve was in January 2020, soon after DJ Evolve was shot at B Club. This was at the Nairobi Hospital, where DJ Evolve had been admitted for many months for treatment, long before Covid began."

Adding, "I am a community leader among the DJs, which is why I and other community leaders decided to follow up on the family and see how we could assist."

Asked how it was like interacting with her when she started the fundraiser, DJ Shock said, "Mama Evolve is a very prayerful lady, very humble. She was devastated by what had happened to Evolve, at the same time she was very courageous, trusting in God every step of the way."

Shock continued, "It also meant a lot to her that we were walking with her all these months since that time, we would call her, meet with her at the hospital when she was visiting Evolve, visit her and DJ Evolve at home, doing our best to offer encouragement, resources and prayer where we could."

Her sudden death left many in shock, paying tribute to Mama Evolve, DJ Shock said, "I am so saddened that she passed away, it was so sudden and nobody had time to react, there was no chance to visit her in hospital; before we knew it, God had come for His daughter and taken her home.

She has been such a pillar of strength and inspiration to everyone during this journey, this is a big-hearted lady who loved Evolve so deeply and was so generous in her time to making sure he got the best she could give him.

Our sincere condolences go out to Evolve and the family, this is a difficult thing to process. We all feel her absence and wish she was still with us. She will be dearly missed by so many!"

The queen of the decks also added that this is the time that the entertainment fraternity should reach out to DJ Evolve and the family to comfort them during these trying times.

"Let us all reach out to DJ Evolve and the family with encouragement and comfort where we can, Mama Evolve was a wonderful lady who really made an impact with her continual prayers and faithful service.

May we all be inspired to do our best to make the world a kinder place to others as she did with her presence and time while with us."
