Late Charles Ouda, Blessing Lung'aho nominated for Kalasha Awards

The late Charles Ouda, actor Blessing Lung'aho, Abel Mutua, Sarah Hassan are among the nominess of this year's Kalasha International awards. 

This is the 13th edition which will be the climax of a one week festival drawing local and international delegates. The glittering ceremony takes place on March 30th, 2024, at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), celebrating the cream of the crop in Kenyan and international film and television.

This year's award season boasts a record-breaking number of submissions, with over 1500 entries across 37 categories. The significant increase, compared to the previous year, reflects the flourishing Kenyan film industry, with a notable surge in submissions for the animation category. Additionally, the awards saw a commendable increase in international category submissions, signifying Kenya's growing presence on the global film stage.

A jury comprising of seasoned professionals from diverse film and television backgrounds was responsible for the rigorous evaluation and selection of the nominees. The jury comprised of Naftally Muriuki - Association of Animation Artists of Kenya (A3K), Elias Nabutete - Kenya Scriptwriters Guild (KSG), Annabel Cheshiniwe - Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB), Charity Torut- Kenya Film Commission (KFC), Ledama Sempele- Kenya Film and Television Professionals Association (KFTPA).

Lucy Mwangi- Producers Guild Kalasha Academy Chairperson, expressed her delight "We were deeply impressed by the sheer volume and creativity present in this year's submissions. The remarkable increase in entries, particularly in animation, is a powerful testament to the immense potential and growth of Kenyan filmmaking. Selecting the nominees proved challenging yet rewarding, and we firmly believe we've chosen works that truly embody the best of Kenyan and international film and television."

The Kenya Film Commission CEO Mr. Timothy Owase added;

"The Kalasha Awards remain a cornerstone in recognizing and celebrating exceptional talent within our industry. The record-breaking submissions and the jury's insights highlight the remarkable development and diversification of Kenya's film and TV landscape. We are confident that this year's ceremony will be a truly unforgettable event, showcasing Kenyan creativity to the world. "
