The Media Council of Kenya has mourned Capital FM sports journalist Sean Cardovillis.

Cardovillis was found dead Saturday morning on the staircase to his house at an apartment where he lived alone on Rhapta Road in Westlands.

"The Media Council of Kenya joins the family, friends and media fraternity in mourning the death of veteran sports journalist Sean Cardovillis," MCK said in a statement.

Cardovillis worked in the media industry for a period spanning over two decades.

At the time of his death, he was working with Capital Group but had previously worked with Nation Media Group and in the Seychelles.

"He will be remembered as an ingenious, committed and exceptionally talented sports journalist who set high standards in sports reporting. may his soul rest in eternal peace," MCK said.

Cardovillis has been mourned by both the media fraternity and the country's top leadership including President William Ruto and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Ruto said he was saddened by the death of the brilliant and outstanding broadcaster whose impact he said will be missed dearly.

"He was a cool, insightful and gifted journalist who played an integral role on our radio stations," the President said.

Gachagua said his wit and wide knowledge of various sports, especially motorsport, will be greatly missed while fellow radio maestro Maina Kageni said he was his first boss.

"You mentored me and clapped for me at every stage of my career... I thank you for that," he said.

Prior to his untimely death, Sean was scheduled to host 1,500 and 5,000 world champion Faith Kipyegon at 3:30 pm on Saturday.

Despite Maina having revealed that the sports newscaster had been battling an illness but managed to bounce back on the air, Sean's last moments on social media painted a picture of a man who was active and seemingly in high spirits.

Police and witnesses said his body was found at his staircase by a cleaner who had gone to clean the area leading to his house on the fourth floor of an apartment.

The officers said it wasn't clear whether he was leaving for work or had died Friday night.
