Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has called for peace in the country amid the ongoing anti-government demonstrations by the opposition Azimio coalition.

Speaking on Wednesday when he stepped out in the streets of Nairobi to distribute food and bottled water to anti-riot police and demonstrators, Sonko cautioned Kenyans against violent protests adding that the citizens are at risk of losing lives.

“I’m urging the people to be peaceful and let the government work on its promises. If the young people burn this country they have nowhere to go but leaders like me have houses abroad like London and Dubai where we can relocate to,” said Sonko.

Sonko however admitted that the cost of living has gone high but he appealed for patience from Kenyans on the issue. He said the country’s economic hardship started way back before the Kenya Kwanza administration took over.

“The prices of basic commodities have gone up but it all started years ago,” he added.

At some point along Kenyatta Avenue in CBD and Ngong road near Kibera, Sonko came across the protesters and he managed to convince them to stop the protests after he distributed food, water and money to calm them down.

The former governor who is a well know philanthropist distributed bottled water, sodas, cakes and other eateries to anti-riot police and some protesters across Nairobi.
