A few months ago Kenyan artist Mejja lost his voice.
For a man who uses his voice to earn a living, this news was depressing. His symptoms started while he was outside the country for a music tour in Australia.
Although he did not cancel the show as reported by Kenyan blogs, he felt he did not give his fans the best as he was struggling with his voice.
In an interview with Massawe Japanni, Mtoto Wa Khadija says had he gone to the hospital immediately after he landed in Kenya, the situation would have been salvaged.
"When I was in Australia I performed but I was struggling. That is why I apologized to my fans.
Kenyans thought I had cancelled the show.
When I came back, I went to my chemist guy and he gave me some tabs for me to take.
I believed in him as he has 'treated' me before."
Mejja says despite his chemist guys changing his tabs to stronger ones he never got well.
"I took the drugs for like two weeks but there was no change.
That is when I decided to go and see the doctor. When I got there, the doctor told me he wished I had gone to the hospital earlier."
He says he went to the hospital thinking the treatment would be easy but it wasn't.
"I went to the hospital thinking it is something easy.
The treatment is slow and that got to me.
You are taught to breathe, voice coaching, what you are supposed to eat, how to steam etc.
My glands had no moisture, so I had to take tabs to do so.
I became depressed."
What are some of the things he was told not to eat?
"I had to take warm water
I was told not to eat some type of fruits, No to drink unboiled milk , weed among other things. I was also not supposed to take sugar.
I was not to expose myself to the cold.
The hardest thing for me was leaving sugar."
