Mejja. He says his song 'Jana Kuliendaje' was inspired by his then alcoholic brother.

Kenyan artist Mejja alias Okwonko says his brother's battle with alcoholism inspired his song 'Jana Ilikuwaje.'

The song is about a drunk guy who goes on a drinking spree and on waking up the next day, he can't remember a single thing of what happened.

Speaking during an interview with Jeff Koinange and Nick Odhiambo, Mejja shared

"The song 'Jana Kulikuwaje' was inspired by my brother, he used to be an alcoholic.

He would come home, he would chase me out.

When he got sober he would ask about my whereabouts. He couldn't remember what had transpired.

I used to feel like he was pretending. So he inspired me to write the song."

In a past intervew with Marlene Chepchumb , Mejja revealed why he uses his mother's surname 'Khadija'.

His mum was a single mum, left to raise three boys alone.

"I call myself Khadija because my father was a sperm donor. As a child, I didn’t understand the sacrifices she made for us.

Sometimes, I would find her crying in the house and she’d act like nothing was wrong.

When I grew up and had my family, I realized she went through a lot to raise three boys. After coming to Nairobi, people would always comment about the name saying it’s a woman's so I started insisting mtoto wa Khadija. She’s my inspiration,”
