Interior CS Kithure Kindiki has declared Friday a Public Holiday to mark Eid al-Fitr .

Kindiki announced through a Gazette notice issued on Wednesday.

"In exercise of the powers conferred by section 2 (1) of the Public Holidays Act, I declare Friday, 21st April, 2023, shall be a public holiday to mark Eid al-Fitr ,"

Eid is celebrated by Muslims across the world to mark the end of the Holy Month of Ramadhan.

The commemoration happens in the first three days of Shawwal, which is the tenth month in the Muslim (lunar) calendar.

The celebrations include wearing new clothes, feasting, gifting, and donating to the needy.

In the morning, Muslim faithful attend Idd prayers at their mosque.

Ramadhan is the ninth month in the Muslim calendar and falls on different dates depending on the lunar cycle.

In 2023, the 29-day fasting period started on March 22 and will end on Thursday, April 20.

Ramadhan is known as the Holy Month as it is marked by a period of fasting which is one of the Pillars of Islam.

There are five pillars with the other four being faith, prayer, charity, and making the pilgrimage to the Holy City of Mecca.
