March 8th, the World marks this day set aside to celebrate women.

Kenyans participating in the online hashtag are sharing their list of women who inspire them.

Here are fun facts you should know about International Women's day

  1. Purple, green, and white signify International Women’s Day as they reflect justice, dignity, hope, and purity.
  2. It was officially adopted in 1975.
  3. International Women’s Day was adopted by The United Nations and it is celebrated on 8th March.
  4. It originated more than 100 years ago
  5. The celebration of women's day got women in Russia to vote
  6. According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), "International Women's Day emerged from the activities of labour movements in North America and Europe in the twentieth century."
  7. The International Women's Day logo is a looping, arrowed circle with the female (or Venus) gender symbol at the inset.
  8. The 2023 theme is digital innovation technology for gender equality #embraceequity
  9. Many countries chose to mark the day as a national holiday. Kenya is not among those countries. Afghanistan, Cuba, Vietnam, Uganda, Mongolia, Georgia, Laos, Cambodia, Armenia, Belarus, Montenegro, Russia, and Ukraine have an official holiday.
  10. International Women’s Day is a combined celebration with Mother’s Day in several countries, like Serbia, Albania, Macedonia, and Uzbekistan.
