Leaders on Friday paid growing tributes to veteran TV broadcaster Catherine Kasavuli who died after a long battle with cancer.

Defence Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale described Kasavuli as a trailblazer TV journalist who graced screens with pride in her days.

"It is with profound sorrow that I have learnt of the death of Catherine Kasavuli who, for a long time, has been battling cervical cancer," Duale twitted.

"Of the few female faces that first graced our televisions at news time was that of Catherine Kasavuli. She prides as the first female journalist on Kenyan Television, having started her career in 1985."

He added, "May Allah grant her soul eternal rest and safe passage into the afterlife."

Mombasa governor Abdulswamad Nassir said he had received the news of the death of Kasavuli with "great sorrow".

"It is with great sorrow that I receive the news about the death of Catherine Kasavuli, a veteran news anchor at KBC that graced our screens with news in the early years of broadcasting in Kenya and came back with the legends edition in the same station," he twitted.

The governor said the fallen TV legend had inspired many youths into journalism.

"On my behalf, my family and the people of Mombasa, I would like to extend my heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the late legend Ms. Catherine Kasavuli.May her soul Rest in eternal Peace," he said.

Kavuli died on Friday morning after battling cervical cancer for long.
