President William Ruto's daughter Charlene Ruto has defended her story of selling 'smokie kachumbari' while at the university to sustain herself.

In an undated video that circulated on social media on Wednesday, Charlene claimed smokies were the only thing that sold at the time.

She was a student at Daystar University, where she graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Communication in 2015.

At the time, Ruto was serving as Deputy President in their first term with former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

"I was in Daystar University, and smokie kachumbari was the only thing that was selling, I was encouraged to take up the small business," she said.

Speaking on Saturday after a tour to Kibera where she delivered gifts to residents, Charlene said the story was true.

This was after the video received mixed reactions from Kenyans, with some tweeps claiming that she was lying.

"I was somewhere talking to some university students. We were talking about savings and investment, so I thought to encourage them and tell them my story when I used to sell smokie kachumbari at Daystar," she said.

"Kuna witnesses. Ni ukweli. Ni vile tu sina picha kutoka hiyo time (There are witnesses. It is true. It's just that I don't have photos from then)."

She thanked those who defended her when the accusations of her "lying" came up.

In Wednesday's clip, a section of the audience is heard in the video dismissing her claims saying "hiyo ni uongo, aaai mtoto wa deputy president? Hapo umetubeba ujinga".

Loosely translates to: "that is a lie, a deputy president's child,  you have lied to us".
