'Growing up as a stammerer really affected me,'-Dennis Oliech

• "Over the years I have managed to control it a little bit but it's still there."- Dennis Oliech

Ex Harambee Stars player, Dennis Oliech, has opened up on how tough it has been growing up as a stammerer.

Oliech said that when he was growing up he was not as expressive as he did not know how people would react. This is despite him being among the most celebrated players in Kenya.

Sharing his story during an interview with Churchill, he said,

"I am shy and I stammer and it has really affected me. Growing up I had to learn to tame it as I had to do interviews, I was very shy in class because I would fear what people would say.

I had such a challenge because I was a good footballer and I was also the captain so I had to step up. Over the years I have managed to control it a little bit but it's still there."

Oliech has played for different teams among them Mathare United.

"While in form two is when I started playing for Mathare United, I would be paid 18K. At the time my dad had passed away and so my mum had to take care of 9 kids.

We had a hotel and that really helped as we never slept hungry, it also helped us not to join crime. Most of our neighbours were killed as they would go steal in order to feed their families."
