A congregant who swindled a church foreman of Sh 150,000 under false pretense has been ordered to pay Sh 50,000 cash bail alternatively deposit a personal bond of Sh 80,000 with one surety in a similar amount by a Kabarnet court.
John Ndirangu is alleged to have falsely obtained the money by pretending to be in a position of supplying window glasses for the construction of Kituro Catholic church in Baringo Central Sub County.
During a mention of the case on Wednesday before Resident Magistrate Vienna Amboko, the accused is said to have received the money from the foreman, Peter Mucheru, under false pretense contrary to section 313 of the Penal Code.
He is alleged to have committed the offense in August 21, 2020, at the church grounds.
The prosecution led by Josek Abwajo told the court that the offender who is a well-known person amongst the church congregation had cunningly taken the money from Mucheru as he assured him that he will avail the window glasses within two weeks upon receipt of the money.
According to a probation report presented to the court, the suspect who was supposed to pay a bond of Sh 80, 000 by the end of October 2021 has been playing hide and seek game by claiming that he had difficulties in raising the bond since he was overwhelmed by school fees of his children.
Mr Abwajo in his submission asked the court to give the accused a stringent bond term to serve as a lesson to other would-be offenders.
Ms Amboko ordered the accused to ensure that he completes the full payment of the required bond so as to give the court a reason for proceeding to the hearing stage failure to which he will be sentenced.
She fixed the hearing date of the case on January 14, 2022.
