Five remandees have escaped from Manga juvenile remand home in Manga Sub County, Nyamira County.

Nyamira County Commissioner, Amos Mariba who confirmed the incident told KNA that the five, all boys, escaped on Thursday afternoon, while all the remandees had been left in their dining hall after lunch to relax.

“Remandees in Manga remand home had been left in the dining hall to relax after lunch when the security officer heard some commotion towards the kitchen and rushed to find out what was causing the commotion,” Mariba explained.

“The security guard was stunned to see a remandee jumping over the kitchen roof through a broken transparent iron sheet and did not manage to re-arrest him after trying to chase after him towards the main gate where he fled,” said the County Commissioner.

He said the institution administration conducted an immediate headcount on all their remandees and established that five had already escaped from the remand home.

“The five minors, aged between 16 and 17 years, had matters pending before courts of law. Some of the cases involved defilement, robbery with violence, stealing, breaking into a house and committing a felony.

Our police officers from Manga police station are pursuing these culprits to re-arrest them. We are requesting members of the public to give information in confidence in case they know where these juveniles in conflict with law could be hiding because they are equally a threat to the community,” Mariba said.
