Last year when terrorists stormed into Westgate Mall in Westlands area, I was on my way to Kileleshwa. The information coming in was scanty at best as traditional media was caught flat-footed. Actually other than Robert Alai, I was the only one posting any information about what was going on.
At first, it seemed to be a robbery but soon it emerged that it was a terror attack. Some of the people in the shopping complex which is popular with Kenyan Indians and expatriates were talking to Robert Alai letting him know the situation, others were talking to me.
I was the first to post pictures of what was going on at the mall.
The incident served to galvanize the nation and for the once the rhetoric about 1 Kenya, 1 tribe made sense. But as more information emerged, it became clear that the government had bungled the entire operation to liberate the mall from the hands of the al Kebab terrorists -ALL the terrorsists made it out alive. If you're brain dead, allow me to spell it out for you and your monkey uncle; the terrorsits were of the suicide calibre. They went in prepared to die.
Then when it came to disseminating information on what was happening, the government once again fell short of what is conventionally considered a good job. Actually, they fell short of performing what would be considered a mediocre job.
And so it fell to concerned parties and HBO to tell the story according to their definition of "accurate". Good job Government of Kenya!
