Rihanna among celebs to eulogise fashion icon who died of cancer

American fashion icon and creative director of Fendi designs Karl Lagerfeld passed away yesterday, and his close friends and family are still in disbelief.

Th designer passed away after a secret battle with cancer, according to Daily Mail, and his loss will be felt by many fashion lovers.

A member from his fashion house shared the photo above on Karl's Instagram page and captioned it:

The House of KARL LAGERFELD shares, with deep emotion and sadness, the passing of its creative director, Karl Lagerfeld, on February 19, 2019, in Paris, France. He was one of the most influential and celebrated designers of the 21st century and an iconic, universal symbol of style. Driven by a phenomenal sense of creativity, Karl was passionate, powerful and intensely curious. He leaves behind an extraordinary legacy as one of the greatest designers of our time, and there are no words to express how much he will be missed.

Rumours of Lagerfeld’s ill health had swirled for several weeks after he missed a number of events – including Chanel’s spring/summer show last month.

Karl held positions as creative director of Fendi and Chanel designs. Lagerfeld was also responsible for directing trends in fashion across the globe. His fashion career has seen him make friendships with some of Hollywood’s A-Listers, many whom were sad to hear of his sudden demise.

Supermodel Naomi Campbell also shared her condolences, for the man she worked closely with.

She went on to share her experience with Lagerfeld whom she knew since she was a  16-years-old girl starting out in the industry.

Regarded a ‘fashion genius’, Karl Lagerfeld was born in 1933 and worked as an apprentice for Pierre Balmain. He is known to have made a great contribution to Fendi where he worked until his death.
