The death of veteran Benga musician Dickson Munyonyi, known for his hit song "Firirinda," has sparked mixed reactions, particularly in light of a visit by Mount Kenya region leaders to his family.

While some offered condolences and praised Munyonyi's contribution to Kenyan music, others questioned the politicians' motives, especially with the upcoming 2025 elections looming.

Kiambu Senator Karungo Thang'wa led the delegation, including Nominated MP Sabina Chege and Gatundu South MP Gabriel Kagombe, in paying their respects on Friday.

Thang'wa lauded Munyonyi's passion and music's lasting impact in a social media post, stating, "Dick was a true testimony... Rest well, Baba. Firirinda your way to heaven."

However, the gesture drew sharp criticism online. Many Kenyans challenged the leaders' sincerity, pointing out their perceived lack of support for Munyonyi during his struggles with cancer.

"You never helped him when he needed your help most," one user charged, accusing the politicians of using funerals for political gain. "Shame on you politicians... you fly in helicopters to fool the bereaved."

Others echoed similar sentiments, highlighting Munyonyi's past appeals for financial assistance for medical treatment.

"How we wish you were there when all he needed was Ksh100,000," a user commented.

However, some defended the leaders' actions, arguing that Munyonyi's legacy deserved recognition and offering condolences was a natural act of respect.

They emphasized his prominence in Kiambu County and the importance of honouring departed community members.
