This was the case with one family in Gachie, Kiambu County, after their kin was caught at the wrong place at the wrong time.

The pregnant woman was killed on Monday evening during a shootout between police officers and criminals in Riva–rori area of Gachie.

Wanja Mungai, a 27-year old attendant at Meaty Meaty Butchery, would have given birth in February. She died at a Nairobi hospital where she was taken after she was shot in the head. It was not clear who shot her.

A five-year old boy she was with was also hospitalised after sustaining injuries in the incident that took place at about 3pm.

It was said that the woman had gone to an M-Pesa shop to find change for a customer when she was shot.

The bullet that hit her tore through iron sheet and pierced through her right eye.

A report filed at the police headquarters at Vigilance House stated that the shootout involved Administration Police officers and a three-man gang armed with AK 47 rifles.

The gang reportedly intended to steal from a supermarket in the area. Police have since intensified operations in the area following the shootout.

Family and friends gathered on Tuesday at Mungai’s home in Gachie to make burial arrangements.
