Bus fares nationwide are set to decrease by up to 10 percent soon, according to Albert Karakacha, the chairperson of the Matatu Owners Association (MOA).
In an interview with the Star on Monday, Karakacha characterized the fare reduction as a gesture of support for Kenyans despite recent changes in fuel prices.
"We have instructed our members to lower fares to assist the common mwananchi because without them, we can't conduct business. We will be reducing bus fares by approximately five to 10 percent," he explained.
To ensure compliance with the fare reduction, Karakacha stated that they will monitor the situation through the MOA grassroots leadership.
While acknowledging the government's decision to decrease fuel prices, Karakacha urged them to also address the high prices of spare parts and tires.
"We appreciate President William Ruto's efforts, but he should also engage spare parts and tire sellers because they remain expensive," he remarked.
On Sunday, the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) announced the largest drop in fuel prices to date.
Super petrol decreased by Sh5.31 per liter, diesel by Sh10 per liter, and kerosene by Sh18.68 per liter.
The new prices, effective from April 14 to May 14, 2024, are expected to significantly alleviate the cost of living in the country.
