The weatherman has warned that most parts of the country including Nairobi will record extremely high temperatures this week.

The weatherman in the latest five-day weekly forecast said most counties are expected to record high average daytime temperatures of more than 30 degrees Celsius.

The weatherman in the forecast covering the period from February 20 to next week February 24 says sunny and dry weather is expected across most parts of the country.

Kenyans are now advised to stay hydrated and protect themselves from the sun’s rays this week.

“High daytime temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius are expected in various counties, while some parts of certain counties may experience low nighttime temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius," the weatherman said.

"Stay prepared for fluctuating weather conditions this week."

These counties include Nairobi, Turkana, Samburu, Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Isiolo, Garissa, Tana River, Lamu, Kilifi, Mombasa, Kwale, Taita Taveta, Kajiado, Makueni, Kitui and Machakos.

Others include Kiambu, Embu, Laikipia, Baringo, Elgeyo-Marakwet, West Pokot, Bungoma, Kakamega, Kisumu, Busia and Narok.

“Make sure to stay hydrated and protect yourself from the sun's rays during the hot days, and bundle up warmly for the cooler nights. Stay safe and enjoy the diverse weather patterns across Kenya,” the warning says.

This comes even as heavy rains continue to cause havoc in parts of western Kenya and the Rift Valley.

In the latest incident, two pupils were killed after being swept away by flood water in Eldoret town on Monday.

The pupils were walking home when they slipped and fell into a rain water drainage system following heavy rains in the town.

The forecast, however, shows that areas in the South Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, Highlands East/West of the Rift Valley, Southeastern lowlands, Coast and Northeastern Kenya may record light to moderate rainfall.

North Western counties of Turkana and Samburu will experience record high temperatures of up to 40 degrees Celsius during the day with the temperatures expected to drop to between 12 and 16 degrees Celsius at night during the forecast period.

North-eastern counties of Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa and Isiolo are predicted to record daytime temperatures of 39 degrees Celsius before dropping to 18 degrees Celsius at night.

These counties are expected to experience sunny mornings and partly cloudy nights with showers over a few places.

Temperatures at the Coast will be 35 degrees Celsius during the day before dropping to 24 degrees Celsius during the forecast period.

These counties which include Mombasa, Tana River, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale are predicted to have sunny intervals in the mornings and afternoons with a chance of showers over a few places at night.

“This forecast should be used in conjunction with the daily (24-hour) forecast issued by this Department. County-specific forecasts are available from the offices of respective County Directors of Meteorology,” Director of Meteorological Services David Gikungu said.

Temperatures in the Southeastern lowlands counties of Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado and Taita Taveta will record temperatures as high as 36 degrees Celsius during the forecast period.

Counties in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley including Nairobi, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu and Tharaka will record temperatures as high as 31 degrees Celsius.

The temperatures are however expected to drop to as low as six degrees Celsius in some areas during the week.

These counties are expected to experience sunny intervals during the morning and afternoon, and partly cloudy nights with a chance of showers over a few places.

Counties in the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin and the Rift Valley will record daytime temperatures of as high as 31 degrees before dropping to 10 degrees at night.

They include Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia and West Pokot.

Some areas of the counties will record rains over a few places in the mornings and a chance of showers over a few places in the afternoon and at night.
