In response to the escalating cases of femicide in Airbnbs, the government has implemented stringent measures to address the issue nationwide.

Commencing next Monday, a government crackdown will be initiated on all unregistered Airbnbs and other short-term accommodations.

These premises are mandated to register promptly with the Tourism Regulatory Authority (TRA), aiming to ensure the highest safety and security standards for guests, as per a joint statement from the Ministries of Interior, Tourism, Gender, and Education.

"The registration process is designed to ensure that all accommodations meet the highest standards of safety and security for guests," the statement emphasized.

Scheduled to commence on February 5, 2024, the crackdown will be executed by National Government Administrative Officers (NGAOs) working in collaboration with the TRA.

The government has committed to collaborating with booking platforms to restrict unregistered rentals, accompanied by the imposition of severe penalties, fines, and revocation in cases of non-compliance.

The involvement of Resident Associations is encouraged to enhance the effectiveness of law enforcement, including information sharing, joint inspections, and coordinated responses to safety standard violations.

This initiative reflects the government's dedication to safeguarding the well-being of individuals utilizing short-term rental services.

All stakeholders in the sector are urged to adhere to these regulations, recognizing their legal and moral responsibility to ensure a safe environment for everyone, regardless of gender.

The statement was jointly signed by Internal Security PS Raymond Omollo, Gender and Affirmative Action PS Anne Wang'ombe, Higher Education PS Beatrice Inyangala, and Tourism PS John Ololtua.

In response to the femicide crisis, women marched in Nairobi, Mombasa, and Kisumu, advocating for an end to femicide.

The Legio Maria Church advised caution among women in relationships, emphasizing the deceptive nature of appearances and promises.

Female Parliamentarians urged President William Ruto to declare femicide and Gender-Based Violence a national disaster, calling for expedited investigations into ongoing cases.

Opposition leader Raila Odinga and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi also voiced concerns, emphasizing the need for caution in online engagements and technology use.

Mudavadi called on religious and community leaders to educate the youth about potential dangers associated with social media.
