Harrison Mumia, Atheists in Kenya Society president now says Kenyans with low income should only have two kids.

The society has advised Kenyans with low incomes should have smaller families of two children at most.

This is due to the harsh economic times.

In a statement, the organisation said  the cost of living has been rising steadily over the past few years and continues to strain people’s finances, with many Kenyans struggling to afford even the most basic household items.

“We applaud all those women who have chosen to be child-free,” said Harrison Mumia, Atheists in Kenya Society president.

Mumia further encouraged Kenyans who can afford to adopt children.

“Adoption of children should be an alternative to getting one's child,” he said.

He added that smaller families are more financially stable due to fewer expenses and shared resources.

“Our message to Kenyans, especially women is that children should never be a priority if you cannot afford to raise them,” he said.

He cited the Kenya Economic Report 2023, which said 77 per cent of workers earn less than the minimum wage, which covers approximately half of living costs.

The Atheists in Kenya Society is an atheist organisation, registered under the Societies Act in Kenya. It is the first non-religious society to be registered in the country.

The society believes that the most reasonable conclusions are the ones that have the best evidence.

The goal of Atheists in Kenya Society is two-fold; separation of church and state and to offer support “to like-minded people in a country where the majority have religion.”

Atheist refers to someone who does not believe in the existence of a god or any gods.

Atheism is contrasted with theism, which in its most general form is the belief that at least one deity exists.

Historically, evidence of atheistic viewpoints can be traced back to classical antiquity and early Indian philosophy. In the Western world, atheism declined as Christianity gained prominence.

Atheist organisations have defended the autonomy of science, ethics and secularism.
