Kenyans now finally places faces behind two Wells Fargo staff who disappeared with with Sh94 million Monday morning.

Their photos have since been released by DCI.

The suspects who have been identified as Daniel Mungai Mugetha (crew commander) and Anthony Nduiki Waigumo (driver) made away with the company’s truck shortly after the money box was loaded, leaving behind the police escort car that was waiting to be flagged off.

“Oblivious that the truck no. KBA 517T they were to escort had minutes earlier snaked away, the armed escort team went to enquire from the management why the loading was taking too long,” the DCI said.

“By that time, neither the truck nor the crew members could be traced.

The police who were waiting to escort the cash from the company vault said they did not know the vehicle had left until almost an hour later.

Officials said the vehicle was destined for a bank located at Nairobi’s Kenyatta Avenue, ferrying the cash belonging to Quickmart Supermarket.

Police in Lang’ata were mobilized to pursue the daring duo, only to trace the empty truck abandoned in South C.

A special operations team has since been deployed to pursue the suspects.

Police suspect an inside job in the latest drama and have visited the rural homes of the two suspects as part of the probe into the same.

Police said they hope to recover the money and arrest the suspect for prosecution.

This is the latest such incident to happen after a lull in the industry.

Past heists

In February 2010, another daring heist happened when a firm cash-in-transit crew disappeared with over Sh300 million in Mombasa, leaving their police escorts stranded.

In September 2019, men posing as police officers stole 13 bags carrying Sh72 million belonging to a bank from a firm van in Nairobi.

Police said the impostors stole the cash-in-transit from the firm head office and an ATM in Nairobi West.

Officials reported the staff had left the headquarters in two vehicles with three men they thought to be cash-in-transit police officers escorting them.

However, the men turned out to be robbers who took their phones and offloaded the cash to another car, a Toyota Noah.
