Nine Kenyan women are in Indian custody after they were arrested at  Mumbai Airport for attempting to smuggle Sh156.4 million worth of gold.

Officials said the incident captured by CCTV showed the nine engaging in a fracas with the airport guards in an attempt to shift attention from their illegal business. 

Shooting 

A police officer was this week hospitalised after he was shot and seriously wounded by gunmen in an ambush in Loyangalan, Marsabit County.

The officer, Corporal Mohammed Dahir, was shot in the stomach, chest and pelvic area after gunmen opened fire on them as he drove six of his colleagues from the Arapal Platoon of the Anti-Stock Theft Unit.

He had picked the officers who were reporting back for duty from the Kambine area headed for Loyangalan on Sunday when they fell into an ambush by local gunmen.

Burning of buss, and trailer in the wake of protests 

Goons attacked and burnt a bus along Ngong Road, Nairobi in the wake of fresh protests that were called by Azimio leader Raila Odinga.

Police used teargas to disperse the group that had gathered on the road in a bid to restore calm.

Some youths at the scene said those behind the attack were not from the area.

On the same day, a trailer was set ablaze by unknown people along the Southern Bypass.

Sudden deaths in the city 

Police are investigating four separate cases of sudden deaths in Nairobi.

The victims were found in separate places on Wednesday and Thursday.

The first incident happened at a city hospital where a woman who had tried to procure an abortion died.

The woman who had been referred to the facility had been to a private clinic for the mission before it went bad.

She was then sent to the city hospital where she died Thursday night, police said.

Police were called to the scene and said an investigation will be conducted.

Police sentencing 

A police officer attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigation headquarters was convicted on Tuesday this week over the killing of a businessman and politician in Limuru six years ago.

Edward Moi Munjalu was found guilty and sentenced to 30 years by Justice Mary Kasango of murder in the death of William Mwangi Kimani on August 27, 2017, at Club U-Turn in Limuru Town.

Kimani, a building, and construction engineer was shot and killed at dawn following a scuffle that erupted after he refused to buy the police officer alcohol, prompting the club bouncers to intervene and eject him (Munjalu) from the premises.

Crime report 

The total number of crimes reported to the police increased by 8.4 per cent to 88,083 in 2022.

The Economic Survey-2023 report says 81,272 cases were reported in 2021, 69,645 in 2020, 93,411 in 2019 and 88,268 in 2018.

In 2022, there were 3,056 cases of homicide, 3,281 in 2021, 3,111 in 2020, 2,971 in 2019 and 2,856 in 2018.

Additionally, a total number of persons committed to prison increased from 160,121 in 2021 to 169,579 in 2022 out of whom, 60.8 per cent were un-convicted prisoners.

This is despite efforts to address the population of prisons in general by using other alternative means to solve disputes.
