Police in Rongo have arrested a man for  allegedly impersonating the ICT and Digital Economy CS Eliud Owalo.

The man had been allegedly running a Facebook account, purporting to be Owalo.

The last post written on the account bearing the name Hon Eliud Owalo was on December 24 at 1730 hrs.

The suspect is had been promising business opportunities, employment and empowerment programs to unsuspecting Kenyans.

Detectives recovered five mobile phones believed to be used in the scheme recovered.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has been cracking the whip on those running fake social media accounts in the name of prominent personalities in the country.

In December 2022, a Sugoi artist was arrested for impersonating Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

The 22-year-old Collins Kipleting Serem alias Rengstar was also accused of fraudulently obtaining money from unsuspecting Kenyans.

Detectives were yet to establish the exact amount of money he had obtained from Kenyans.

"He was arrested after he created a fake Facebook account bearing the Deputy President’s name and obtained money from unsuspecting netizens," read a post from the DCI.

Detectives said the suspect has been using the account to call for support to help raise funds for feeding Kenyans facing hunger.

Serem appeared before a Nairobi Court and pleaded guilty saying he created the account in the DP's name to look for views and likes for his songs.

He was fined Sh50,000 or a seven-month jail term for the charges.

The DCI had cautioned the public to be wary of fraudsters operating pseudo social media accounts impersonating CSs,PSs and other senior government officials.
