Former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko shared his thoughts on the ban of Primary Boarding Schools terming it as 'unsafe' for the children and also ill-advised.

"Hii mambo ya ku abolish primary boarding schools hapana. In my own opinion, I think the move is ill-advised. For some children a boarding school is the best and safest place to be away from chaotic marriages, torture from stepfathers/mothers, uncles and aunts etc," he began.

Adding that boarding schools are a safe haven for most children specifically those who are orphaned, those living in blended families, and those whose guardians are in unstable relationships-That these schools are more conducive for them to learn.

"Not forgetting orphans. Also, single mothers & slay queens who are hustling normally bring different men/ uncles to their homes when their kids are away in boarding schools. There's no way I can criticize the same Government which I serve and fought for but I think there's.." he concluded.

Below are other reactions to Sonko's utterance:

DolineWhy do people assume children in boarding schools are neglected while those in day are well taken care of? there's freedom of choice which parents should have, if one doesn't want to take their children to them it's not compulsory

pokwakoI work in Malindi my kid schools in Nairobi, wakiabolish ndiyo huyo mtoto asomeje? I think this people got to leadership without strategies.

Nga'shBoarding school for some kid are safe heaven for them, away from their alcoholic and toxic parents and relatives.

Rachael chepngetichBoarding is not the perfect solution for irresponsible parents. Children in day school are not faring better... They are abused and neglected. A policy framework is needed to guide on parenting and child safety. Our kids are hurting

His opinion comes after the government announced that as of January next year, they will abolish boarding schools for pupils in grades 1 to 9.

Adding that those joining junior secondary should join day schools in their areas.

What do you think about Primary Boarding schools abolishment? Should it be done?
