Students who just sat for their Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) exams are set to join Junior Secondary School in January 2023.

Let us break down the changes the CBC system has brought from grades 6 to 12 for those who do not know.

Junior high school includes grades 7,8 and 9. That was previously called class 7, class 8, and form. Here the students are about 12-14 years of age.

Therefore, senior secondary is from grade 10 to 12 which is the end of high school. Here the students are getting to 18 years of age.

Let's now delve into how the Junior Secondary School (JSS) will work as of January 2023.

According to the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) director, Charles Ong'ondo here are the subjects to be introduced to the JSS students who just sat for the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA).

Here are the subjects introduced at this stage;

Students will be introduced to History, Geography, Business Studies, Home Science, life skills, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, and Social Studies.

The CBC system will also introduce students to a new learning structure that is inferential learning and optional foreign languages.

"We will also introduce optional subjects in foreign and indigenous languages. The curriculum designs for JSS gets learners from theories to practicals and experiments. Science will metamorphosise to become integrated science which will have technology," Ong'ondo stated.

The breakdown in this system in turn means that there will be a gap in the number of teachers to make the transition.

Therefore according to Ong'ondo, the institute is at an advanced stage of recruiting 30,000 teachers starting January 2023.
