A suspected Al Shabaab trained gang behind M-Pesa robberies in Nairobi has been arrested by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

According to police, the successful arrest happened after a rigorous 3KM chase in Kayole by detectives from the elite Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau and a contingent of officers from Kayole police division.

"In the 48-hour meticulously planned operation, detectives had prior to Katitu’s arrest rounded up two of his accomplices Brian Wambua Mbindyo and Danson Musyoka Mulee," read a DCI statement.

The notorious gang leader is believed to have had training from Al Shabaab militants in Somalia where the gang leader is alleged to have come from.

According to a DCI statement, the detectives were in hot pursuit of the suspect after a gruesome murder of a 38 year old man in Donholm.

A police report indicates that they shot him four times three times in his legs and once in his chest before they snatched his bag and took off.

"In the incident that attracted countrywide attention, the gun-toting thugs had pumped four bullets into Nicodemus Mbuvi Munyasya, who was walking out of Donholm's Family bank carrying a carrier bag, killing him on the spot," read the DCI statement.

Among the incidences that the gang has been accused of participating in, is one of a woman who was robbed three days to the murder.

The robbery happened as she left her Mpesa shop in Umoja estate, and shot her in the ankle before fleeing with her handbag which contained an unspecified amount of money.

Another reported robbery was that of a man from Embakasi who was attacked together with his wife an M-Pesa shop worker at gunpoint.
