A few weeks ago matatu touts were trending for hanging dangerously on a public service vehicle.
The conductor got arrested for that mischievous behavior and a few days ago he opened up about the incident that led to his arrest.
His name is Katana and he resides in Umoja and disclosed his humble background and his six years in the matatu industry.
He started;
“I went to college but had to drop out and started hustling, and that’s how I joined the matatu industry, I would make 200 shillings a day in the beginning,"
In an interview with citizen digital, Katana described the viral clip and how it led to trouble.
He stressed that he never thought his actions were suicidal or endangering his life and that of other motorists.
“Then, I thought of my actions as fun and crazy, the endangering part was an afterthought that happened after I was arrested, that’s when it hit me that I had committed a traffic offense,” he noted
The viral conductor added that the hanging was a sign of achievement after loading the matatu, he said that one gets good profits on more rounds and low profits on fewer rounds.
What transpired was a bet among two friends trying to outshine the other while dangerously hanging on the speeding PSV.
"We were headed to town from Umoja, but it all started from town. It was good business for a weekend job. The booming business, excitement, and the hype of the vehicle led to the stunts we witnessed in the viral video,” he said.
On their way back to the CBD is when they intensified their actions.
He was arrested and taken to court to answer to charges. Katana was fined for riding dangerously with no uniform and slapped with a Ksh.30,000 fine.
“I regret the action because I am jobless, I know of six people who are jobless because of my action, and the owner of the bus is making losses because of me. People say I was suicidal but I am not, I just took my energy to the wrong place, I got carried y and took it overboard," he finished
