Paul Gicheru: What to know about the late lawyer

Lawyer Paul Gicheru who was a suspect at the International Criminal Court (ICC) is dead. Gicheru was found dead in his Karen home on Monday night September 26.

Police said that Gicheru was found dead with the cause of death yet to be established. "He had late lunch and felt unwell and went to bed but he did not wake up," police said.

Police said he was found unresponsive at about 7 pm. "His son too collapsed and was taken to Karen hospital in stable condition," police added.

Police arrived at scene later and announced a probe had been opened. Here are things to know about him:

1. He was an Eldoret based lawyer at the time of his case. He could fluently speak the Kalenjin dialect after living in Uasin Gishu.

2. He died at 52 years of age.

3. He attended Kapsabet Boys High School between 1987 and 1990. Thereafter he studied Law before going to the Kenya School of Law for a postgraduate diploma in law.

4. He began his career at a law firm in Eldoret called Kalya and Company Advocates.

5. After,  he opened his own law firm named Mr. Gicheru and Company Advocates at Veecam building on Oloo street Eldoret.

6. He offered free legal services.

7. In 2014, the head of Kenya’s national treasury, Henry Rotich, appointed him to head the public procurement review board up to 2nd October 2016.

Thereafter his case at the ICC began.

- He was named by former Prosecutor Bensouda as one of the men behind witness interference plot. Gicheru denied he was part of the effort to scuttle the ICC case in a bribery plot.

-  Mr Gicheru fought back actions to extradite him to the Hague.

- In November 2020, Gicheru turned himself in in to the Dutch based court to face the accusations.-

 -  in July 2021, The ICC pre trial chamber, while confirming the charges said that between April 2013 and January 2014, Mr Gicheru offered various witnesses (millions of shillings) in cash instalments in exchange for withdrawing as Prosecution witnesses in the Ruto and Sang case”. 

-  5 other Kenyans were mentioned as acting together to undermine the prosecution’s case against Ruto and Sang.

- Gicheru was facing a 30 year jail term if he was to be found guilty.

- Ruto and his co-accused Sang were both charged with instigating ethnic violence after the disputed 2007 election in which more than 1,000 people died and hundreds of thousands were displaced.
