There is always a risk of street crime and robbery in any area.

One of the most common crimes in the city is mugging or street robbery.

The situation has gotten worse in the past month as many have fallen victim to mugging especially around Kenya Archives.

Through research, observation, and testimonies from people, below are some ways and tricks that  robbers use to lure you into their traps;

1. Winning Gift Promos

Cases of Nairobi residents losing large sums of money on street promotion scams have increased.

These people operate in large groups and they are often set up with merchandise that includes electronics or promotional material such as shirts just to entice their targets.

This is just robbery without violence because they convince their targets first and then ask them to deposit a small sum of money via Mpesa as a supposed registration fee.

As the target transfers the fee, they discreetly obtain mobile money PINs which are crucial to their next step.

They then assist in the activation process for the reward scheme and that's when they will transfer all your money and ensure that all the evidence of transactions has been cleared.

To avoid all these, just be cautious with your personal information to avoid falling prey to the scam in the city and also avoid listening to them no matter the situation.

2. Disruption

Some people start causing chaos out of the blue and the issue can be small as a disagreement which will attract the attention of people and that's when they get their chance to grab and steal your properties from money, bags to even phones.

Whenever you see such disturbance, make sure that you stay far away from it.

3. Dropping coins and some white plates

Be on the lookout for guys who drop coins in a matatu or some white plates anywhere in town because the moment they ask you to help them up, that's when they get the opportunity to empty your pockets and bag without your knowledge.

4. The close-up fist bump

This is whereby the muggers approach you by being super friendly to the point that they even greet you and try to engage with you and that's when they point out a gun at you or even a knife.

To avoid being in such a situation, ensure that you don't just greet random people or even engaging with them just run your errands and leave.

5. People seeking direction

In this situation, a random person just approaches their targets with the aim of stealing from them without them knowing, and in the whole process, they have some drugs that they use to zombify whoever speaks to them.

And after all that, you'll just give them your things willingly without violence, and you will just realize that you made a mistake after they get away with your valuables.

Ensure that you avoid speaking to strangers in town because you never know what they are on.

6. Men and Women disguised as police officers

These people pose as police officers in order to scare their victims to surrender their valuables before robbing them and they even have handcuffs.

All in all, just avoid carrying your valuables in Nairobi CBD just to be on the safe side.
