George Magoha, the Educations CS has announced that schools will be re-opened Monday, August 15, 2022.

In a statement on Wednesday, August 10, Magoha asked parents to ignore any prior communications that indicated schools would be reopened on August 11.

"I ordered the early closure of all Basic Education Institutions to allow for adequate preparation and conduct of the General Elections. We indicated that reopening would be on the 11th of August 2022,"  he said.

Magoha said the ministry has been informed that the tallying exercise would last for a few days and ballots would still be moved from learning institutions that were used as polling stations.

"Therefore, following further consultations, I hereby convey the Government’s decision that Basic Education Institutions will reopen from Monday, 15th August 2022," he said.

The CS apologized for any inconvenience caused and said his communication supersedes any communication made earlier on basic education institutions.

CS Magoha on Monday, August 8, had said that learners will only report back to school from midterm break if the environment is safe after the General Election.

Schools are traditionally used as polling and tallying centres every election year

A gazette notice by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission indicated that almost 250 schools will be used as tallying centres.

Another 17 institutions of higher education will be used as county tallying centres while 230 schools in select constituencies will be used as third schedule constituency tallying centres.

Before the Covid-19 pandemic, polls were held when learners are away from school for the August long holiday.
