Anti-riot police engaged youths in Mathare in running battles on Monday as anti-government protests escalated.

Heavy to small stones were placed along the road by youths in an attempt to block the police.

The youths threw stones at the police, who were standing at a distance.

Police who were armed threw tear gas in an attempt to disperse and chase away the youths.

This was in the repetitive mode for most of the morning hours.

More anti-riot police have been deployed in Mathare, Nairobi after protesters barricaded a section of Juja road near the Moi Airbase camp.
