Traders in Kahawa Wendani in Nairobi are counting huge losses after fire engulfed their stalls in the wee hours of Tuesday, 20th September and razed goods worth millions of shillings.

Sources say the fire broke out around 4 a.m at a stall next to Jostem Restaurant along Nakumatt Road. Other reports indicate that it has reduced more than 32 stalls to ashes.

Traffic snarl-up was witnessed along Thika Road as fire brigade from Kiambu and Nairobi counties struggled to put out the fire. The cause of the inferno is yet to be established.

Fortunately, no one was injured in the early morning fire as the fire fighters were able to contain the fire before it spread any further or caused more damage.

Social media users have lauded Nairobi and Kiambu counties for their quick response which helped contain the fire.

In August this year, Nairobi county received four fire engines worth Sh200 million from the Japanese government.

While handing the equipment over, Japanese chief of mission Mikio Mori said that his government would also ensure that Nairobi county government firefighters are trained on how to use them.

The fire engines were a big boost to the county government which only had six functional engines.
