Twelve years. That’s how long it took former Chelsea and Real Madrid midfielder Geremi Njitap to find out twin children he believed he fathered belonged to his wife’s ex-husband.

Local media in his native Cameroon reports that he has filed for divorce after DNA tests confirmed the paternity of the children.

“No children have been born from this union,” court documents say.

The former Indomitable Lions player, 45, was married to his wife four years after they welcomed the twins.

She reportedly claimed the children born in June 2008 were his, something that motivated them to formalize the union.

“But the discovery that the children were from her previous partner destroyed the couple’s harmony. It caused him a huge emotional shock,” divorce papers say.

Until the DNA test, the footballer raised the children as his.

Njitap played for Real Madrid between July 1999, and July 2003, when he left to join Premier League side Chelsea.

He had a brief loan transfer to Middlesbrough from July 2002 to May 2003 before leaving for Chelsea.

The midfielder played for Chelsea until July 2007 when he left to join Newcastle on a free transfer.

He left Newcastle in July 2010 for Ankaragücü on a free transfer and left the club after seven months for AE Larisa where he stayed until his retirement in January 2011.
