Judy Nyawira, the wife of film producer Abel Mutua fell pregnant while in college. The two were on the same campus and their love blossomed after he was dared by his friends to chat Judy, a fresher.
During their romance, she fell pregnant, and they both struggled with how to break the news to her mother. Judy cried endlessly when the test confirmed she was pregnant.
"I felt like my head would crack, mimba ndio graduation present napelekea mama yangu, I cried over that fact, that I told my mum I was going to college to make her proud, but this is what I did," said during an interview with YouTuber Lynn Ngugi.
He assured her that he would be supportive regardless. The next challenge was breaking the news to her mother as she had promised to first finish school. Judy was six months pregnant at the time.
The pair agreed that Abel would visit Judy's mother in Karatina and explain the situation to her.
"So I called my mum and told her I'm coming with a guest. So I went home like 2-3 days before he came to report himself," he felt he owed her that much.
On the morning of the planned visit, Abel surprised the family by reaching the village at 8 am. "He left Nairobi very early, by 8 am he was already home. Imagine I was calling him for directions, and he tells me he is already at the shopping center. I doubt he slept at night."
He came alone, "The first thing he did after he got to our house and said 'Hi' to mum, do you know the first thing Abel did after saying hi and realized things were ok, he requested to take a shower," she laughs recalling that day.
He was sweating out of tension. "By the way we just put some water in a basin and he went to the bathroom to shower. All along I kept telling him my mum is cool. But you see it's one thing to be told, but it's another thing to witness it. We even gave him a fresh t-shirt since the one he wore had lots of sweat."
Judy told Lynn that Abel and her mother now have a wonderful relationship. When he took responsibility for the pregnancy, Abel informed Judy's mum he would pay the remainder of her college fees.
"He told mum henceforth I'm his responsibility. My fees for terms 2 and 3 he cleared it, as I was finishing college."
Judy and Abel have been together for 15 years.
"I think niliingia box, let me say the truth, one because of the feeling that Abel Mutua is hitting on me. So for me honestly, I would say that's the reason. He's a famous guy, why me? So of course there was that feeling, It's me he has chosen. But now later you start learning about him."
