'I had my first blackout in class 3' Man confesses to Maina Kageni

In extreme cases alcoholism causes mental disorders.

A Kenyan man left Maina Kageni after admitting to being introduced to alcohol at the tender age of 8.

*Mike was introduced to his first drink by his dad.

Years later he says the early introduction was a blessing in disguise as hemight have experimented with alcohol as an adult and ended up addicted.

The discussion was based on the recent Nacada findings that habitual drinking in Kenya starts at age 11.

Sharing his experience Mine narrated

"Let me tell you Maina, I was introduced to alcohol at age 8.

Now am 37 and I do not drink 

I had my first blackout in class three."

Did he stop drinking?

"I stopped drinking in high school.

Am glad I started drinking early because I have no interest in alcohol right now.

I have seen it destroying people and careers."

Mike says his dad gave him his first alcoholic drink

"My dad has never abused alcohol but he is the one who introduced it to me.

We went to some place and he ordered a Tusker and requested I take a soda.

I did not want soda so he ordered a Tusker for me." He said in conclusion

According to NACADA significant risk factors for alcohol and drug use at the community level include

poverty, community, and cultural norms, positive attitude towards alcohol and drug use, and easy access to cheap alcohol and other substances.

Family-level risk factors include

Ineffective parenting skills, a family history of alcohol and drug use or mental health disorders, and high levels of family conflict or violence.

At the individual level,major risk factors include mental health disorders, low involvement in school, joblessness, history of abuse and neglect, and history of substance use during adolescence among others
