Award-winning actress Lydia Gitachu has opened up on the hardships she faced after her mum abandoned her.

The actress says she would not wish for any child to grow up in such an environment.

Speaking during an appearance on 'Moments with Justus' she narrated;

"I was abandoned by my mum, she took me went, and dumped me at my grandmother's place.

My grandmother did not even know I had been dumped there.

Even as a child there are things that happen to you and you feel you are not getting love and warmth.

I wet the bed till I was in form 3."

She says she had always been treated differently.

"I could tell there was a difference between my siblings and other kids.

I was born late so my brothers used to feel like a nuisance.

At some point, I was sent to stay with my aunt, whose husband was an alcoholic.

He would beat my aunt almost every day and he would also throw us out. The only good thing is that he never picked on who to send out, he sent all of us.

There was a struggle for food in the house. My aunt was also bitter because I used to perform well unlike her kids."

Lydia also survived rape severally from her cousins. But the harassment did not stop.

"My other cousin would come on top of me and hump, I tried committing suicide so many times.

The first-born cousin would beat me, the second one would rape me and the third also tried to rape me.

My female cousin used to ask me to lick her private parts and she would ask me to do the same to her.

I only left that home after my grandmother learned what I was going on."
