The family of Rita Waeni Muendo, the victim in the Roysambu murder case, has disclosed that the suspect demanded a ransom before her tragic death.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the family revealed that on Sunday morning, the suspect sent a message to Waeni's father, demanding Sh500,000 within 24 hours for her release.

"On Sunday, January 14, at 5.00 am, her father received a message, delivered from her phone number, demanding a ransom of Sh500,000 within 24 hours for her release," part of the statement read.

Upon receiving the message, the family promptly reported the matter to the police and DCI, initiating investigations. The suspect continued his demands, sending two additional messages to the family seeking the ransom.

Waeni's lifeless body was discovered on Sunday, stuffed in a paper bag off Thika Road, Nairobi. According to the police, she had been stabbed and dismembered in an apartment along TRM Drive, Thika Road, with her head still missing.

The police detained a suspect on Tuesday, intercepting him at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport as he attempted to flee the country. He is currently held pending identification and interrogation.

The family eulogized Waeni as an intelligent and smart young woman known for her kindness, infectious laughter, and ability to light up any room she entered.

"Her family and friends will forever cherish the countless memories of Waeni's joyous presence and her dedication to making a positive impact on those around her."

The family has requested privacy as they mourn the death of their daughter, appealing to the media for respect and understanding during this difficult time.

"Our focus is on cherishing the precious memories we shared with her and supporting each other as a family," they stated.
