Police are investigating an incident in which the body of a middle-aged woman was found in a pool of blood in a lodging moments after she had been murdered in Mkuru slums, Nairobi.

The incident occurred on Wednesday. According to both the police and witnesses, the assailant has yet to be identified but is known in the area.

The assailant is said to have entered Ikuuni Club, which also offers lodges, and requested a room.

After paying Sh1000 for the room, he reportedly entered the room in the company of a woman, 21, promising to return for drinks later.

In the morning hours, a cleaner who was conducting her chores discovered the lifeless body of the woman on the bed in a pool of blood.

She screamed for help and police were called. The team established she had a deep cut in the neck.

Nairobi police boss Adamson Bungei said they are investigating the incident.

He said they are yet to know the killer and the motive.

"We don't know what happened to motivate the murder," he said.

The body was moved to the mortuary as part of investigations into the murder.

Workers at the joint are under probe for failing to take details of the room guests as a requirement, Bungei said.

In another incident in Embakasi area, a 48-year-old woman collapsed and died in her bathroom.

Police and the family of Rose Juma said she was in the bathroom on Wednesday when the incident happened.

The cause of the death is yet to be known. She was rushed to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The body was moved to the mortuary pending autopsy.
