A university student whose body was found in a river in Bomet was strangled, a postmortem examination has revealed.

Officials said Maryanne Wangari, 22, who was a student at Bomet University was strangled and the body dumped into Nyangores River on the outskirts of Bomet where it was discovered.

Longisa Referral Hospital's Medical Superintendent Dr Weldon Kirui led the postmortem exercise at the facility on April 11.

He said they had also taken samples from her genitals for further tests.

“The findings indicate that the student died of strangulation and there were also other findings from the genitalia where lacerations were widespread. There were no other injuries found in the body,” Kirui told journalists on Tuesday evening.

The body of the fourth-year communications student was found floating in Nyangores River on the outskirts of Bomet town on Monday, April 10 after she went missing on Tuesday last week.

Police say they are talking to five fellow students who were with her last.

Bomet Central police boss Bashir Ali said the students include four males and a lady.

The other students had informed the police the deceased was missing.

This prompted a brief search in the area in vain until a week later when a villager found it in the river.

Police said she was officially reported missing on April 4.

Bomet University informed the police of the development and a search for Wangari started before the news of the discovery was made.

Police say they are tracing her last moments before she died.

The motive of the murder is yet to be known so far, police said.

Police said the body had started to decompose at the time it was discovered.

The university fraternity has asked the police to enhance security in the area.

In February, a female third-year student at the university stabbed her boyfriend in the chest after he broke up with her.

He died from excessive bleeding and she was later apprehended by police and prosecuted.
